About the seminar

The DUG-WW is facilitating together with Iurii Melnyk (Ph.D. in Social Communication) and InMOE a seminar on the topic of Media in times of wars and revolutions. The seminar has the educational purpose of promoting media literacy by shedding light on the role of mass communication in the circumstances of deep social upheavals of different times and peoples.
During the first lecture, the ways in which the media can act as a tool to justify war, create an image of the enemy, exploit patriotism, foster collectivism, call for self-sacrifice, and so on. The most effective methods of propaganda and manipulation (both with own and with the enemy civil population) will be considered.
The second lecture deals with revolution as a socio-political phenomenon and the role of media in it. The factors influencing the emergence of a revolutionary situation will be traced, as well as the key patterns of a typical revolutionary process. Particular attention will be paid to velvet (colour) revolutions, in which the role of the information factor is crucial.
The final workshop will give to the participants the opportunity to be political strategists and to get a clearer picture of the technological side of a revolution, both in the process of initiating and developing the revolution, and in the process of compromising its ideas, goals, and actors.
